Samsung showcased a new type of LCD television at Las Vegas CES - the LCD-LED TV. Traditional LCD televisions rely on a florescent backlight to illuminate the screen (called "cold cathode fluorescent lamp" or "CCFL") while the new LCD-LED TV relies on light emitting diodes to backlight the screen.

The new type of LCD television will allow an increase in the number of colors that LCD televisions are able to display. Currently, LCD TVs can display only 65-75 percent of the NTSC (or PAL) color palette; the new LCD-LED TV claims to generate 105 percent.
